Behind the Mask
KajunCutie (Myrna), Moderator

We poets are often shy, hesitant to share who we are. Well, there's no need to stay behind that mask -- come out and join us -- share your thoughts.

COMPLETE RULES:

The Behind The Mask Writing Challenge runs from Sunday to Friday 8 PM US Eastern Standard Time.

Challenges are set up and posted by Moderator.

Note: For a rough idea of the Café‘s varying time zones if it is Midnight Thursday in New York, US it is the following times globally:

California, US: 9pm (Thursday)
Hawaii, US: 7pm (Thursday)
Sydney Australia: 3pm (Friday)
Manila, Philippines: 1pm (Friday)
Delhi, India: 10:30am (Friday)
London, England: 5am (Friday)

1. The Behind The Mask Writing Challenge is a THEME based word exercise. NOT A PHRASE! THERE IS TO BE NO USE OF PHRASES AT ALL. The host may refer to a write to give participants an idea of what is desired of them, but should not quote a direct line as it may be confused as using a phrase.

The host must pick a THEME and a THEME only. Laughter / Addiction / Character, what's in one? / Simplicity / Quality of Light / Resilience were all themes properly used in past challenges. At the end of the challenge The Host will select a winning write from the official entries that he or she feels best fits the tone of the given theme for that week's challenge. Only the Host's imagination limits the theme and has final decision on if a theme has been used appropriately.

Any Hosts submitting a specific phrase will be asked to select a specific theme instead. If a new Host is unsure of their idea for a theme, please contact the Moderator for assistance.

For those entering the challenge, the core spirirt of your write must be about the chosen theme. Use of the theme name may be used in the title of the write, but the context of the write itself must in some way reference the chosen theme.

2. All registered Starlite poets are eligible to compete.

3. All entries to the Behind The Mask Writing Challenge must contain the following information:
o The name of the poem;
o Its Starlite link (Do not post your entire poem in the thread)
o And its status as Official or Just for the Love of It (JFTLOI).

4. Entries may be posted in the current thread directly by the poet or by emailing the challenge Moderator, Myrna, at KajunCutie926@aol.com to post the link in the challenge thread.

5. Entries containing adult/mature subject matter MUST be noted in the challenge thread. Also, entries containing adult graphics MUST be noted. This will give readers the choice to read or not.

Note: If an entrant displays an image or content that is inappropriate he or she will be contacted via e-mail with a request to remove or replace said graphic. The entrant has 48 hours to respond to the request. If there is no response, the entry WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE CHALLENGE by the Moderators. The entry will still be available on Starlite for others to enjoy, but it will not be allowed in the Behind The Mask thread Officially or JFTLOI until the requested changes have been made. If an entry is removed by the Moderator for this reason it then will be brought to the attention of the Starlite Café’s Administrator Devin). He has the ultimate decision on whether the entry is removed from The Starlite Café site altogether.

Also note large graphics/images (400x400 pixels or larger in size) may be freely used within an individual poet’s submitted write. However, the posting of over-sized graphics inside the challenge thread is no longer allowed. Neither is the posting of multiple smaller graphics. The moderator reserves the right to make a judgment call and remove an over-sized graphic or multiples from the thread without notification.

In addition, please remember the Starlite Cafe is foremost a poetry site. If there are too many graphics being used and/or there is an overload of additional "commentary", the Moderators reserve the right to edit non-essentials from the thread without notice of such for the overall enjoyment of the Behind The Mask thread.

6. When posting your own entry, DO NOT POST ENTRIES ON THIS PAGE. Please click on the current week's link below and post within the challenge thread itself.

7. Only ONE official entry allowed per POET(not pen name, but poet). Only the first entry posted to the thread may be Official. The type of entry (official or JFTLOI)) must be noted in the challenge thread. All addition entries by that entrant must be submitted JFTLOI. Furthermore, if an Entrant's first entry on the thread is JFTLOI, all additional entries must also be JFTLOI for the remainder of the challenge. Any entries undesignated at the end of a challenge will be deemed JFTLOI. Official entries may be changed to JFTLOI; however, entries listed as JFTLOI may NOT later be changed to Official.

Note: If it is discovered during a challenge that a poet has entered multiple Official entries under different pen names ALL entries, including the first official entry, will be disqualified from that week’s challenge. We want a level playing field for all challenge participants.

8. All entrants MUST either have an active e-mail address or their Starlite Private Messenger feature turned on in case there is a need to be contacted. Please see your Starlite Profile page for changing your preferences.

9. Those who enter officially are expected to be available to host the entirety of the challenge run should they win.

If an entrant feels they cannot complete the entire run of a challenge, the entrant MUST do one of the following:

o Change their official entry to JFTLOI immediately, if the current challenge has not yet ended;
o Contact the current Host and Moderators as soon as possible of the change in status;
o If your hosting has begun and you must drop out, you are to contact the current Host, the Moderator immediately. Resolutions will be arranged on a case-by-case basis.

If a host will be away from a computer for a couple days during their challenge they MUST let the Moderator know lest it thought the challenge had been abandoned.

10. Active participation by Host is a necessity to the Behind The Mask Writing Challenge. If a host is noticed as not commenting on entries and not being active in the thread itself for two or more days he or she is considered inactive. The Moderator will make every effort to contact the host to ensure all is well via e-mail or Starlite Private Messenger. If there is no response from host after 24 hours of sending e-mails, HOSTING PRIVILEGES ARE THEN CONSIDERED FORFEIT and the Moderator will take over as interim Host. The Moderator must then read and comment on all OFFICIAL entries for the duration of the challenge and will choose the next Behind The Mask winner.

11. Those that enter officially, are EXPECTED to do their part and actually return at the end of a challenge to see who won.

If you are the winner, please contact the Moderator IMMEDIATELY to set-up the next challenge.
While, it is not required, if you did not win, it would be nice to offer congratulations to the winner.

12. When contacting the Moderator to set-up a challenge the following information is requested:
o If Host is new to Starlite a small bio. A selection of what is on the host’s Profile Page (if anything is there) will suffice. If Host is not new to Starlite but has not hosted BTM (or has not done so in a while), giving a small update on their life thus far is fine.
The above bio information is not required, but really is nice to have, especially for those new to the Café and/or the Behind The Mask Writing Challenge as a way of introduction.

The following information is REQUIRED:
o The chosen THEME for the challenge (See Rule 1 Above)
o A few lines on the source of their chosen theme and/or what inspired them to choose it. When quoting directly from elsewhere (poems/songs/books etc…) the source information MUST be included in the introduction.

13. To open hosting opportunities to as many poets as possible Hosts for Behind The Mask Writing Challenge may oversee only ONE Starlite Writing Challenge at a time. They may not enter officially in another Starlite Writing Challenge until their active hosting duty of Behind The Mask is complete. If a potential host already has his or her name as an official entrant for another Starlite Writing Challenge and wins and chooses to become host of Behind The Mask, he or she must change all other Official entries in other challenges to JFTLOI or contact the Moderators of the other challenge to change or remove their entry from competition. Eligibility to post officially in another Starlite Writing Challenge starts again after their active hosting challenge of Behind The Mask officially closes.

Hosting of the Pieces of You Writing Challenge is dependant upon when a host currently hosting one Challenge ends and when the POY challenge begins and is decided on a challenge-by-challenge basis.

A person may host a Starlite Writing Challenge and Form Over Substance challenge at the same time.

14. Hosts MUST READ AND COMMENT on all Official entries and/or the first JFTLOI entry by a poet. If time allows, they may also read and comment on additional submissions as the come.

15. The challenge ends on Friday at 8pm (US EST). If the current host must end the challenge earlier than 8pm, he or she must state their official closing time at the beginning of the challenge or as immediately as possible so everyone has a chance to note the time change.

16. The current challenge Host chooses the next Host. The criteria? In some way, that person’s (or persons’ – if a collaboration) entry especially touched the Host -- critically, emotionally, or intellectually.

The current Host must post the chosen winner and one runner-up (but no more than three names total) in the challenge thread no later than NOON Saturday (US Eastern Standard/Daylight Time).

The Host MUST IMMEDIATELY e-mail (and/or private message) the winner of the challenge and MUST also email the Moderators the names of the winner and runners-up in case it is needed.

17. The chosen winner MUST send their information (theme, reference, bio etc...) to the Moderator as soon as possible so the challenge can be properly set up for Sunday (see Rule 12 Above).

If the chosen winner does not directly contact the Moderator within 24 hours of announcement, the right to host may be forfeit and the Facilitator/Moderator will contact the first runner-up to host.

18. If you are chosen as runner-up and 24 hours have elapsed since the winner was announced on the board DO NOT PRESUME you will be hosting. The Moderator will contact you if this is the case.

19. Items that do not meet the requirements or follow the earnest spirit of these rules and/or are otherwise deemed disruptive or disrespectful to the thread and/or the challenge WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE CHALLENGE by the Moderators. If it is felt an entry was removed unjustly from the challenge contact the Moderator Myrna at KajunCutie926@aol.com for reconsideration.

If there are questions or problems please email the BTM and Starlite Writing Challnge Moderator…

Myrna at KajunCutie926@aol.com.
