LORD, PROP ME UP

I read a story about an old deacon
who prayed 'Lord, prop us up on our leanin' side.'
He was comparing us to his old barn that, while
still sound, was leaning on one side and had
to be propped up. This story is the inspiration
for this poem.

Lord, prop me up on my leanin’ side,
for sometimes life’s storms assail.
Most of the time I’ve handled the ride,
but this t’was the fiercest gale.

I know I can stand through the trials,
if you will put up some poles.
There still are so many years and miles,
don’t let me be a lost soul.

You have always been my life’s beacon,
lifting me from every fall.
It’s only the one side that’s weakened,
the other side’s standing tall.

Sometimes I will find myself leanin’
towards bitterness and hate,
my soul can sometimes be weakened,
lift me up before it’s too late.

So, Lord, prop me up on my leanin’ side,
for sometimes life’s storms assail.
Most of the time I’ve handled the ride,
but this t’was the fiercest gale.
