Trust

She holds his hand tightly,
Looking up into his eyes,
She says, “Daddy, I love you.”
He squeezes her hand and says,
“I love you too.”
“Can you carry me?”
“You’re too big to carry,
But I carry you in my heart everyday.”
“Where is you heart?”
He points to his chest,
“It’s in here.”
“Is it a big heart?”
“Yes, it is. It’s big enough
To hold all the love I have for you and mommy.”
“Who gave you your heart?”
“God did. He gave you one too.”
“Will my heart be as big as yours?”
“One day it will be. You can fill
It full of love too.”
“Daddy did your daddy hold your hand
When you were my age?”
“Yes, he did. He taught me all about love,
And he taught me how to love. He was
A wonderful daddy.”
“Just like you?”
“Yes, just like me.”
“What would you say if we bought
An ice-cream cone?”
“I’d like that.”
Together they walk hand-in-hand.
A memory was built that day
that would never, never go away.
