TIME, SAND, REMEMBERING

TIME, SAND, REMEMBERING
(JFTLOI
Mai's “Follow the Dream Challenge”
Phrase: “stone (just) broke my hourglass”)
I was thinking about you the other day.
Something I seem to be doing a lot lately.
Remembering -
the length and curl of your hair;
its redness, and the way it would
often fall over your left eye,
making you look sexy and mysterious -
how we would relax and converse
as I combed your hair.
I enjoyed doing this,
this personal touch,
we shared our deepest secrets.
*****
We were young then,
full of life
and time was seen as endless.
Like trying to understand the vast
distances between far away galaxies.
Time was unfathomable
and yet, urgent -
like the need to be even closer
as we kissed,
or to radically change the world,
make it fit for human beings to live in.
Time seemed insignificant then,
like trying to identify a single grain of sand
while walking on a long and lonely beach;
yet desperate to stop the sand
from being pulled by crashing ocean waves
out into the swirling sea.
*****
Yes, we were young then,
and in the midst of raucous social unrest,
someone tossed a stone in our direction.
It was a smooth, oval stone,
weathered by wind and rain
and the old traditions of erosion.
It was a small stone,
a little tan, with streaks of yellow and ochre
and a touch of blue.
It fit nicely in the palm of your hand.
I am not sure if you did it on purpose,
or, we were both just caught up in the times.
But your aim was perfect.
This eroded, weathered
‘stone broke my hourglass’
causing the grains of sand
to drip, drip, drip,
then flow out, disperse
and get scattered over time
into insignificance.
*****
Every now and then
I search to see if I might find this stone.
Or perhaps the pieces of the hourglass,
thinking that if I can,
then maybe I might once again
comb your hair,
converse,
and dream of your red, Milky Way kiss.
*****
But it has been too long ago.
Nothing from then remains.
Not even me.
