~The Heart~

The hardships of this life
had taken much from one,
whose heart was given
freely to those who
needed and wanted love.
Alas, the heart had
so many holes to fill,
at times, it seemed
there were more than
the heart could contain.

Some holes were tiny,
very minute, left by ones
who crossed the path
momentarily or who stayed
for only a short period.
Their imprints only left
a small hole. Then there
were the gaping wounds
left by much heartache
and strife. Included
in these are the ones,
who sought
to destroy and break
the heart completely
until nothing remained.

How much sadness
and pain could one
heart take?
At times, there
seemed to be no answer.
The great abyss grew
so large, it enveloped
the complete heart.
During these times,
a darkness overcame,
and blocked the light
from view.

With humbleness and a
willingness to struggle
on, despite the bleakness
of the situations,
and the pain they evoked,
the heart trudged on.
Continuing to beat, even
though so weak, at times,
it seemed to have reached
the final beat.
This was not to be.
The transition was
too long, yet eventually
it came, despite all the pain,
struggles and hardships.

During this time, the light
would shine brightly again,
and the darkness
would flee.
It was during these
periods, the heart
gave of itself
more than usual.
Reaching out to those,
who also struggled with life,
and its pains.

The heart gave
more and more of itself,
and slowly regained
strength to endure
yet another struggle;
face another hardship,
and then again
know the depths
of unbearable pain.
The mind often could
not comprehend
the unique
and ebullient joy,
which flowed freely
without reserve.

Life continued on
flowing freely,
and without hesitation.
The heart welcomed
all who dared enter
its chambers.
Giving sustenance to
each one
gladly sharing
the wonders of love
and friendship.
Most visitors were
welcomed and stayed
for only as long as they
needed, and then were
on their way.

Then there were those
who were greedy,
and wanted more
and more.
Draining life
from the heart.
Only a couple
of times, the heart
was forced to break
the connection,
and deny entrance.

When the heart
was drained
and dying,
it had to seek
the solace of the
one true love,
whose light
had guided,
and filled it from birth.

It was time to enter
again the dark place.
The walls were very high.
Some deemed it an
intimate sanctuary.
The heart and mind
both struggled,
during this time,
to reconcile themselves
to the facts.
Once again,
the hardships of life
had taken control,
and forced
a solitude, which was
necessary to restart,
refurbish, and strengthen
the heart and mind,
to withstand
the onslaught,
which would soon follow.

The depths of despair
were so great the mind
could not comprehend
a solution. So it chose to
shut itself off, and float
freely in the darkness.
Awaiting the dawn
of morning light.

The heart cloaked,
and protected itself.
Often, winding inward
and outward,
again and again ,
to sooth
the pains.
Seeking to close
some of the holes,
which were now
shreds of flesh,
torn completely;
hanging by a mere
thread.

Yet, the heart hung on,
and toiled slowly;
the open wounds
healed again,
and the blood
loss cease to be.

Then came
the morning light.
Shining brightly,
illuminating the mind
and heart.
Driving the darkness
into oblivion, once more.
Carefully checking the heart,
the light shone brightly
in shadows, which
remained, and changed
them to light.

The mind was refreshed
from its long rest,
and again ready to take
on the world.
This time, though,
the heart was
more cautious,
and not so quick
to invite all to come
and leave
their troubles behind.

The heart had learned
a valueable lesson,
'to thine ownself be true'.
It had learned there were
those, who would take
and take,
and never give
in return.
They were the destroyers
of the world,
whose only goal in life
was to steal, use,
and throw one away,
when the supply
was too low
or completely empty.

Trepidatiously, the heart
opened up again
to those in need.
Being mindful of those
who would use it up,
and then disgard it
as a worn out shoe.
The heart became more
selective about who
was allowed to enter
the inner chambers.

Coming upon a heart,
who also was as cautious,
the heart smiled.
A kindred soul had found
the path to this heart,
and likewise, the heart
was glad to welcome
this one into its
inner chambers.
This heart was
very timid, and so very
cautious. It dared not
believe that another heart
could love it so completely,
seeking nothing
in return, but love.

Thus began the journey
into the stairway
of life and love.
Cautiously, each step
was taken, to move
higher into the glory
of the brillant light,
shining brightly to
illuminated and guide.
Giving solace and comfort
with sweet peace,
and relief.

The journey
was nearly complete.
The heart stopped to
rest and reflect on
the trials of life;
remembering the one,
who paved the path,
making it straight
and narrow. As the
Angels sang in sweet
release, the heart
knew peace had come,
and home was just
around the next bend.

With humbleness
and adoration,
the heart sang,
once more.
For true love stood
with opened arms,
welcoming the heart
to rest and receive
those rewards, which
it was due. Never
looking back, but with
eyes focused,
the heart knew
at last it was
truly free.
