Hard Times
HARD TIMES by Carey Lenehan
She's trying hard to smile,
even if her teeth
Have been kicked in by life
She's trying to make the best,
of a very bad world,
keeping the faith
staring death in the face
And surviving
She's trying to make things better
To reassure herself
She is not a loser
because that label
Applied so loosely,
is a harsh one to bear
He's trying to get by,
ignoring the fact that other men
Are more successful
or handsome
Than him
He's trying to provide
For the hungry mouths at home
To fill the cupboards with food
And the wardrobes with clothes
But the work is so hard
it's killing his spirit
And the open mouths of the brood
Never close entirely
We're trying to survive
On an unfair world
Where we have more than many
But never enough
We're trying to understand
Why luck comes to some
But not to the rest
Why the struggle seems
Sometimes
More than it;s worth
When the easy way out,
is to just give up
Injustice, division, gaps of age, wealth or chance
Take the gloss off the surface of life
Perhaps we are winning, as it seems at first glance
But the lonely souls cry
In despair at the sky
As if God might stop laughing
And give us a chance
I watch the rain fall, watch the clouds mass and gather
Wish for some good luck, to negate the other
Wonder if life is a joke or a test
And feel like I'm failing, a loser at best.
And you?
