All I Ever Want

***

All I ever want are these,
the things that sing and make me merry,
simple things that always please:

cherry trees and honey bees,
a tin of truffles, Taylor sherry;
all I ever want are these,

homemade bread and cheddar cheese,
a feather bed, a bright canary,
simple things that always please:

dinner parties, memories
with friends alive and literary.
All I ever want are these,

love amidst a summer breeze,
a floral garden sanctuary--
simple things that always please:

a symphony of subtleties,
though tastes may change and whims will vary.
All I ever want are these:
simple things that always please.
