Christmas When I Was A Girl

Things were different when I was a girl.
We got snow at Christmas, and we were so thrilled!
Santa and no snow????
That couldn't be so!!!

We lived on a farm where everyone worked.
Even the little ones had chores of some sort.
Mother and I made cookies, cakes and pies.
Oh what a treat for our little eyes.

Christmas plays at school were still allowed.
We said our lines and sang the carols very loud,
while our parents were on the edge of their seats
hoping we would remember what words to speak.

Trimmed with garlands of tinsel,
stood our huge real tree,
with colored glass balls,
and big colored lights that glowed in their beauty.

We each had a stocking,
nails held them just dandy.
Mother filled them in the evening
with fruit, nuts, and store bought candy.

We were eager to get to bed Christmas Eve
to awake early morn
to see what we had received.

We believed in 'Old Santy',
and since toys only came to us once a year,
whatever he brought us...we were happy!

Cars could be heard coming up the long drive.
That meant aunts, uncles, and cousins had arrived.
Laughing and brushing snow from their faces,
I thought our house was one of the happiest places.

Finally it was time to serve the Christmas feast.
Turkey and ham with all the trimmings, and homemade rolls made with yeast.
Chicken and dumplings were mother's specialty,
as was her cornbread dressing and turkey gravy.

Then it was time for the family to go.
With goodbye hugs, they went back out in the snow.
As I watched them drive away,
I was already anticipating next year's Christmas Day!
