The Pack
To understand a species wild,
and know just how they hunt.
With my tale you’ll be beguiled,
I’ll tell you that up front.
A pack of killer whales we are,
all hunting to survive.
Patrols will take us deep and far,
to find prey we will strive.
I am Shadow and I'm young,
a hunter of five years.
When our trap is almost sprung,
I work with all my peers.
There’s Silver, Streak and Racer too,
intelligent and strong.
In our team there’s quite a few,
all together we belong.
Co-operation is the key,
we communicate and more.
A cut off task is down to me,
as we approach the shore.
Seals ahead are swimming fast,
all aiming for the land.
Our fastest four whales swim on past,
to stop them reach the sand.
The seals all turn away and try,
to slip out through our pack.
In my head I hear the cry,
‘prepare for our attack...’
Rocks are standing off from shore,
too steep for seals to climb.
We couldn’t really ask for more,
it’s almost feeding time.
Our leader is called Lightning,
and he commands respect.
In action he is frightening,
he’s first in to select.
When Lightning strikes I take note,
of how he makes the kill.
Sometimes I see the liquid float,
the blood that he’s made spill.
We take our fill of food and go,
patrolling once again.
Swimming ‘round the great ice flow,
our pack of hunters – ten.
Not yet have I wondered was,
it all really worth it?...Why?
Packs of seals we’ve hunted ‘cause,
if we don’t kill...we’ll die.
The serenity of waters,
our pack patrols as one.
Disguise the many slaughters,
as our survival’s won.
