The Unknown Soldier

Written for the BTM Challenge

He was just a gentle, common man
A simpler soul at best
No smarter than the average bear
No different to the rest

But bravely he took to the plate
As dedication saw
And within weeks of signing up
They'd sent him off to war

He was only there a few days
In the darkness of the night
Laying awake in his quarters
When he heard the first gunfight

He grabbed his weapon, ran outside
And sheltered best he could
He saved 3 men that summer night
He never thought he would

The 4th was carried on his back
As they swiftly ran for cover
He felt a bullet hit his chest
Then another... Then another

He fell upon the dusty ground
In a country he felt unknown
Closed his eyes, one final time
And suddenly was home

At the memorial, in central park
Sometimes I hear them say
'Lest we forget, those grateful souls..
Who fought for us that day'

There it was, etched dark in ink
For all the world to see
Carved into the stone
Where he would always live eternally
