Band of Gold

Was just a simple band of gold,
That bound the two through life
A thin and simple band of gold
He'd given to his wife

She wore it ever faithfully
Through all these many years
Through joy, through pain through it all
The laughter and the tears

They'd lost the house in Baltimore
And then they'd moved out west
His son stillborn in Idaho
Weighed heavy in his chest

They planned to moved to Oregon
But somehow never did
He'd drank too much back then, he guessed
His life was on the skid

He had that barroom fight that night
He spent some time in jail
And she looked older after that
Tired, sad and pale

He'd cheated on her once or twice
He suspected that she knew
She never said a single word
But she changed, like people do

She worked two jobs, he held none
Steadfast, she hid her grief
She still came home, took care of him
She held to her belief

But when life’s hardships weigh too heavy
When the burdens were so grave
Then the faithful spirit soon was crushed
And there was nothing left to save

So here he stood in pauper’s field
Where they laid her to rest...
In a unmarked grave, at peace perhaps,
She'd given life her best

His shoulders shook, his knees gave way
Prone there on the ground...
He'd lost the only thing he had
...but with that knowledge, found

The man she knew that he could be
He wept, in the bitter cold
And he finally understood the pledge
Of that tiny band of gold.
