The Letter

My darling Miranda,

Last night I was blessed with the most beautiful dream
Where in, I saw a kaleidoscope of colors
Whisper across the bluest of azure skies,
And I beheld the splendor of a rainbow
That was reflected in the softness of your gentle green eyes.

This is how I choose to remember you
As I write this letter to you today,
You fill me up with the sweet breath of tender love
That now sustains me in my day to day.

As you know, I enlisted in this army four years ago
When I was only twenty-five,
I've been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan a number of times.
It's been tough trying to keep my spirits up.
Hell, it's been tough just trying to stay alive!

Then you come into my life again
Like a whirlwind---
Helping me to get in touch with God,
And showing me that love really does conquer all---
You chased away my loneliness and renewed my spirit
You helped me to keep standing tall.

I remember how we met as children
Flying kites with our parents in the park,
Kites of all kinds with their beautiful shapes and colors
Filled the skies as we laughed and played with other children---
More precious memories of the pleasures that graced our hearts.

It is the joyous memories like these in our childhood
Of the beautiful moments that we shared,
That bind our hearts and souls together now
Memories that remind us of how much we really cared.

I close my eyes in this tent each night
Amidst the ravages of war,
And I dream about being with you again,
Making love in the afternoon
Feeling your warm breath upon my skin.

As I dream, the look of spring is all around us
And we walk arm in arm
Listening to the song birds croon,
Walking down a path where, on either side of us,
Sweet roses are beginning to bloom.

We are keenly aware of God's handiwork here
As the path leads into a garden,
with flowers of every kind,
Filling up our senses with their beauty
Imprinting scented perfumes and majesty
Deep into our hearts and minds.

My love has wings to carry me now
Across the many miles away,
As I soar with the wind, to be with you,
My dear, Miranda,
Because your love gives me strength today!

I was finally able to get a shower this morning
To wash off the layers of dirt and sweat,
But in the time it took to walk out to my post for duty
The air was thick with dust and the heat so strong
It was like I hadn't even taking one yet!

Please, remember the soft and gentle warmth
Of my arms around you, Miranda,
As you get used to the tenor of my love,
And know that the triumph over my loneliness
Is because of you---
An answer to my prayers from the Lord above!

I am getting awfully tired now
And need to get what sleep I can,
You never know what's going to happen next here
In this war from hell
That tests the faith of each and every man!

I miss you and I love you,
My dear sweet Miranda,
You have my heart forever,
Flynn

I clutch your letter to my chest
And sob uncontrollably,
The letter in my hand just came today
Four weeks after I was told
That you, my darling Flynn, were missing in action
I have never known the world to feel so cold.

I am startled by someone knocking on the door,
And I just sit here frozen, afraid to open it---
Feeling like my heart can not handle anymore pain,
The knock comes again and I move quickly now
I pray that God will look favorably on me once again.

I open the door, with your letter still clutched in my hand,
My chin begins to tremble and the tears begin to flow,
For standing in front of me is you, my love,
A sling on your arm and a smile on your face
What you are saying I do not know!

I am too busy hugging and kissing you
And thanking God for loving us so.
You pick up your letter from the floor and look at it
Then hold me gently in your arms
Saying, 'I'm so sorry, baby, that you didn't know.'

' I wrote you from the army hospital after I was found
Almost dead from starvation and thirst,
I sent you a letter about three weeks ago'.
Then you took your arm out of it's sling,
Saying, 'It was healing kind of slow'.

You had lost two fingers and your arm was in a cast
Then I notice the newest medal, a bronze star, upon your chest,
I touch it gently and ask what you received it for.
You are quiet for awhile and your eyes tear up
'I'll tell you everything, Miranda,
But right now, I just need to rest'.

As I cover you up and tuck you in
Your good hand is by your side,
I noticed you are still holding on to the letter
So I gently slip it out and read it again
And this time I am happy when I cry.

There is a P.S. on the back of the last page
That I had overlooked,

My dear, Miranda, please forgive me
If I must die in this war so far away,
But know that I will die happy because of you
And I want you to always remember,
That, in my eyes, you are beautiful in every way!

I crawl into the bed next to you
Longing for you to hold me in your loving arms,
You awake and pull me to you tight,
Making love with a passion that goes much deeper now
Than that of the sweet, gentle man and his boyish charms,
Who has been transformed by a war
That nobody wants to fight!

I have reposted this poem for this challenge because it is a Letter/ Poem of Love--

It is also a tribute to my 52 year old brother who has recently been called to active duty and deployed to Afghanistan. This tribute is also extended to my niece and nephews who have valiantly served there also. May God Bless them all and keep them in His care!
