Outpacing the Metronome

Time plays to a capricious click track
Living is synchronized with fate
There’s no resetting the metronome
To the rippling rhythm of your own heart rate

Clarity of purpose may hide in the weeds
Seeking the mock safety of disguise
The internal rocking motion is insistent
Demanding that you focus on the distant prize

But you stand there in frozen anxiety
With your fortune clearly in sight
Inertia is life’s meanest rival
And your measure of time is finite

Heel to toe; on you go, maintaining perilous balance
The clock’s face in the corner of your eye
Time plays to a capricious click track
Only to fade to black in the unannounced bye and bye
