Small Dark Skies

I went in search of the black
One day nine years ago
Seeking dark skies, small lights aglow
Amidst great hills but far below
I went in search of darkness and left it with regret
But now I'm back

Great skies I found in that distant when
And for a while I was still
Wanted to stay, refused my will
And that special magic of secret hills
My escape from pain where I could breath
Freed from the world of men

Like all good things about this life
It came then slipped away
A place I loved but could not stay
My darkness lost to endless day
and poisoned skies before my view again
Back to human strife

I wished them back so many times
To stand in silent night
To send my gaze midst the satellites
As they wheel their shining acolytes
An endless immensity of unpeopled open space
Always on my mind

Yet here I find a smaller sky
Grace and peace so near
The vastness that I held so dear
Negated by a colder fear
Of what I miss the most and wish returned
Nature's small dark lullaby
