The Tulip Tree

Laying patiently on my stomach
A dandelion tickles my navel
Beneath the bare branches
Of a once flowering tulip tree
Behind the rusted steel bleachers...
Where local fans gathered
Just an hour ago
To witness their star quarterback
Launch his pig-skinned glimpse of hope
With 10 seconds left
3rd down at their 25-yard line
A slow motion spiraling chasm for the underdog
Now 5 seconds left
When the receiver takes flight
Four... three... two...

And the victory chants still echo
Like confetti that bleeds
Through the cracks of the home team's stand
Adjacent to the dome-shaped
Chrome painted monkey bars
Where I once played innocently
