Of Back Then

Mr. softy

jolly roger
and the
good humor
van

sliding down slid's

ten cent
pony rides

Oh that time
was grand

Climbing trees
in the park

on pretend
adventures
we'd embark

while
building forts
on
empty lots

to save
the girls
from evil plots

The
neighborhood
movie matinee

for just a
quarter
you could
watch all day

Paul Winchell
and
Jerry Mahoney
with

my personal
favorite
Knucklehead Smiff

Stuff your face
with popcorn
and candy

watch
The
Three Stooges

who were Dandy

But the Grandest
memory of then

is the one
I have of
my best friend

I remember best
when
there's a storm

then
in my eyes
tears
start to form

on one dark
and rainy day

while at Grandma's
we had to stay

in the house
because of weather

so mom got
all us
kids together

she opened wide
Grandma's
front door

then sat with us
there on the floor

as lightning struck
and thunder roared

and wind blew
sideways
the rain that poured

my sisters
they were all
so scared

but me,
well I just sat
and stared

I did not feel
one bit of fear

because beside me
MOM was there

but
all my sisters
well
they did cry

and
MOM looked
at me
and
winked her eye

So let it rain
let it pour
let lightning strike
let thunder roar

I'll just open
my front door

then sit
and watch it
from the floor

It brings back
memories
of then

of my Dear
Sweet MOTHER
a BOY'S BEST FRIEND
